what must be
one of the greatest
incentives for holidays
in countries whose words
you cannot follow
is all the conversational drivel
and wordy detrite
run like rivers of golden pears:
the neon adverts are just people
having a great time
the red signs telling you NO
may as well be notices for sex-shops.
people shout good tidings for standing
and drinking beer
naked on streetcorners .
and when i have to open the gates
to my rubbish tip,
i can keep it short
keep it sweet
and only a few dirty cans fall out
